Abstract:

Background & Aims of the Study:  Nitrate is one of the most important pollutants that its reduced form, nitrite, can cause serious problems for human health and environment. Adsorption with cheap sorbents such as Zeolite is the best way for removal of this pollutant. So this study aimed to apply modified Clinoptilolite Zeolite for nitrate removal. Materials & Methods: Firstly, Clinoptilolite zeolite was screened by 1-2 mm sieves for monolithic of it. Then zeolite was boiled in HCL 20% for 3 hours for removal of Carbonate and impurities present in zeolite structure and increase of porosity and purity of zeolite. Finally, the zeolite was dried in temperature of 300°C to evaporate the water present in zeolite structure and increase the absorbability. After the modification of the Zeolite, the effects of pH, time, strings speed, optimum amount of adsorbent in Nitrate removal were investigated and optimized by one factor at the time method. Also reaction kinetics and isotherms were determined. Results: This study indicated that the optimum condition for Nitrate removal by means of modified zeolite as adsorbent is pH=5, contact time of 180 minutes and adsorbent amount of 16 g/l. The investigation of isotherm and kinetic equations indicated that Nitrate adsorption follows Langmuir and pseudo first order, respectively. Conclusions: The zeolite modified by HCL and heat has a higher efficiency in Nitrate removal compared to simple zeolite, because of losing its hydroscopic water and having larger sites, although in total it doesn’t have sufficient efficiency for Nitrate removal.

Removal of Dimethyl Phthalate from Aqueous Solution by Synthetic Modified Nano Zeolite Using Cu2O Nanoparticles

In this paper, a novel nano crystalline sodalite was synthesized and characterized by XRF, XRD, SEM and FTIR analysis. Cu2O nanoparticles (30-60 nm) were loaded on nano zeolite bed and utilized as an adsorbent to remove dimethyl phthalate. The SEM-EDX of modified zeolite indicates that the amount of copper loading on the zeolite was 4.5 wt%. Modified nano zeolite was used as an effective adsorb...

Organic dye removal from aqueous media by using acid modified Clinoptilolite

Dyes are an important class of pollutants which when discharged into water resources can be toxic to the aquatic environment and cause serious problems for public health. Various treatment technologies such as adsorption are in use. For this reason, clinoptilolite was used as a low-cost adsorbent to remove color from aqueous solution. Clinoptilolite was modified with sulfuric and phosphoric aci...

Removal of natural organic matter (NOM) from an aqueous solution by NaCl and surfactant-modified clinoptilolite.

Zeolitic tuffs are found in different parts of the world. Iranian zeolite is a low-cost material that can be frequently found in nature. Surfactant-modified zeolite (SMZ) can be used for the adsorption of natural organic matter (NOM) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption capacity of SMZ; furthermore, the effects of contact time, initial pH, and th...

Removal of Tetracycline Antibiotic from Aqueous Solution Using Zeolite-X Modified by Pyridium Bromide Cationic Surfactant: A Laboratory Study

Background and Objectives: Antibiotics are among the pollutants that have entered uncontrollably in the environment, and lead to serious environmental problems such as disrupting aquatic ecosystems, and causing health problems for humans and other organisms.  Therefore, it is necessary to remove them from the environment. In the current study, zeolite modified by cationic surfactant of cetylpyr...

Removal of cationic surfactants from water using clinoptilolite zeolite

Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of a clinoptilolite zeolite as an inexpensive sorbent material to remove cationic surfactant from water. With an initial surfactant concentration greater than its critical micelle concentration, the removal of surfactant is achieved by admicellar sorption onto the zeolite surface. Although the sorption capacity of hexadecylt...
